The Art of Unemployment is a story that follows a young couple who are first-time parents. Darryl and Charice are two twenty-somethings living in Southeast Washington, DC. Charice is a Registered Nurse at the Anacostia Health Clinic, and Darryl is a talented visual artist/muralist who is in between part-time jobs. The couple needs to generate more income for themselves due to the recent birth of their child.
The film's underlying theme is to capture an artist's emotional struggle. As an Artist, there is a continuous question as to whether or not pursuing your passion or gift is worth challenging the normalcy of settling for a traditional job, especially when the challenge of providing for a family presents itself. During the conversation at "Money's" house, segments highlight the contradictions of the imbalance of how much time away from your life and family is required to earn a livable wage. Darryl insists that capitalism destroys the family structure and is abnormal to natural human behavior.
